Elisabeth Bloemena - biography

From september 1st 2003, Elisabeth Bloemena is appointed as professor of Oral Pathology at the Academic Centre of Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA).
As a professor, Bloemena will manage the histopathological
diagnostics of biopsies and resections from the head and neck region. Also, Bloemena will teach basic pathology. She is involved in research concering diagnostics and prognostics of salivary gland tumors and the function of the Epstein-Barr virus in salivary gland tumors and malignant lymphomas.
Elisabeth Bloemena (1956) studied Medicine at the University of Amsterdam and became a medical doctor in 1983. In 1989 she got her PhD for the thesis "Immunosuppressive mechanisms of prednisolone and cyclosporin A". From 1990 till 1992 she was head of the Oncopathological Laboratory of the Department of Pathology at the Free University Hospital in Amsterdam.
From 1996 she works as clinical pathologist at the the department of Pathology VU University medical Center, Amsterdam. She is specialized in gastro-intestinal and liver pathology and oral and head- and neck pathology. As a scientist, Bloemena has published in international peer-reviewed journals, on subjects of fundamental and applied immunology and oncology.
